Santa Monica, a Lifelong Learning Community

Lifelong Learning Community News - DECEMBER 2007...

Hooray! December begins with the very first annual Public Schools Week, December 2-9. Come see our schools for yourself!

All Santa Monica and Malibu public schools invite the public to come and see firsthand what’s happening in our local schools. Each school is hosting a Coffee with the Principal, a short presentation and a school tour. All schools are in session so you’ll be able to see the teachers and students in action. I think you’ll be pleased and impressed by what you see.

Everyone – parents, alumni parents, residents, neighbors, supporters, grandparents, future parents - is invited and encouraged to attend. The high quality of local public schools is a direct result of our full community’s support. They are truly our schools. Come visit!

Public School Week is part of a new and vigorous communication effort initiated by our new PTA Council President Rebecca Kennerly with the cooperation of the school district and the help of some extraordinarily talented and committed PTA volunteers who are also professionals in communication. Special thanks to Richard McKinnon who edited the World Class Public Schools newsletter which was distributed last week through The Santa Monica Daily Press and The Malibu Times. This newsletter is full of impressive and inspiring facts and most of it was written by SMMUSD high school journalism students.
Updated websites:

SMMUSD is also redoing their website. The new, improved website will be ready in mid January at www.smmusd.org

SMC recently updated their website to make finding classes and enrolling even easier. The events format has been reconfigured. Each day’s events are now posted on the home page. For a three month overview, click on “more” which will take you to a page where, on the right hand menu, you’ll also be able to find SMC events listed by category. Check it out at www.smc.edu

Other news and events:

Santa Monica’s water is now fluoridated! This safe, effective, and well established public health benefit has been a long time coming and will greatly improve the dental health of all Santa Monicans, especially children and older adults.

If you or your children are currently taking fluoride supplements, please contact your dentist or doctor as they may no longer be necessary or desirable.
Santa Monica’s very own, very family friendly, ice skating rink is now open.
