Santa Monica, a Lifelong Learning Community

Lifelong Learning Community News - AUGUST 2010

Santa Monica College: Re-Affirmed!

At its June 2010 meeting, the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) reaffirmed accreditation for Santa Monica College. Reaffirmed is the best result an institution can attain!

The following quotes are taken from the ACCJC 2010 Accreditation Evaluation Report:

“Santa Monica College... is experiencing a renaissance of creativity and constructive collaboration. The college culture values innovation, originality, and student-centeredness.”

“Santa Monica College is actively engaged in providing excellent student learning programs and services for its students.”

“Student Support Services at Santa Monica College are comprehensive, diverse, and targeted at student access, inclusion, and success…. Students are the central focus and programs are developed to adapt to the changing needs of the student body.”

“The Independent Auditor’s Report listed zero audit findings, an outstanding accomplishment. The audit statements demonstrate the college’s ability to manage their finances responsibly, timely, accurately, and with integrity.”

“There is an environment of openess, of optimism, and of excitement in spite of a gloomy budget situation external to the college.”

“Santa Monica College has adopted sustainability as a college value and goal. The college is a leader among community colleges in incorporating sustainable practices into the fabric of the college....this college is an exemplary model of sustainable operational practices.”

“...resiliency and spirit of innovation ... are the hallmarks of Santa Monica College.”

And there’s even more! :) The full report is available online at http://www.smc.edu/apps/comm.asp?%241=253

Our School District has also been reaffirmed
In a very different process, our school district has also been reaffirmed by our community. Our community has rallied to the defense of our schools, working together to beat the clock and raise funds to protect programs and teachers from the chopping block. The Save Our Schools Campaign has raised over $1 million in private funds in the past three months! This extraordinary effort, involving hundreds and hundreds of contributors and volunteers is a compelling testament to the quality and importance of our local schools, and an incredibly strong reaffirmation!

But time is running out.... so, if you have not yet made a contribution to SOS, (and especially if you voted for Measure A!) please do so today. The deadline for contributions to stave off cuts in the school year that begins just next month, is August 15.

To contribute, please go to http://savesantamonicamalibuschools.org/
Please do this today!

Our community’s passion, talent, and creativity have come up with many fundraising opportunities. Please check out upcoming SOS Events at http://savesantamonicamalibuschools.org/SOSevents.html
